Vintage Kachina Doll “Eagle Dancer” by Anthony Largo With COA. Very nice Kachina made from pine wood with real feathers, leather trimmings and fur. Hand painted very nicely and the paint is in good condition (not faded or chipped.) Signed on the base by Navajo carver Anthony Largo. It’s about Seven inches high with about a five inch wing-span. For its age, it is in remarkably good condition but the fur and feathers on top of his head are a bit ragged (see the head close-ups.) The rest of the fur and feathers look good. The Eagle Dancer represents strength and power, and as the ruler of the Sky, is a messenger to the heavens, thought to carry a persons dreams and prayers to the Creator. The Hopi tribe were the original Kachina Doll carvers, creating the dolls to teach their children how to recognize important deities that would appear during the Kachina Religious dances. They were carved from a single piece of cottonwood root to create the dolls, and were carefully painted with symbolic colors and designs. The dolls were used to help children visualize and recognize the immortal beings or spirits that bring rain to crops, cure disease, punish transgressions and control aspects of the natural world and society. The Kachina season begins in late December with the Soyal (Solstice) Ceremony. It is followed by the Powamu Ceremony in mid-winter. The final ceremony comes in July with the Niman Ceremony (ripened corn/Hemis Kachina.) The Navajo tribe doesn’t practice Hopi religion, but began copying some of the dolls, and adding new dolls too. They developed a carving style of their own and their kachina dolls are often from other types of wood and not carved from a single piece of wood. They often have glued on arms, legs and come adorned with leather, feathers, beads and turquoise. The Navajo do have much reverence for some animals, such as the Eagle, and are renowned for their silver work. This is very carefully wrapped and labeled as to the side with the wings. It will be up to you to patiently and carefully unwrap him so as not to break any of the feathers.
